Mărășești

Mărăşeşti ( German: Mara's Chest ) is a town in the Romanian part of Moldavia, in Vrancea County, 20 km north of Focsani and 200 km north-east of Bucharest, on the eastern edge of the Eastern Carpathians. She had in 2002 a total of 12,726 inhabitants, of which 11,122 in the city proper, the others in the local villages.

Attractions

The town is renowned by a great battle during July- August 1917 between the German Emperor and the Romanian Kingdom. A mausoleum containing the remains of 5073 Romanian soldiers was built to celebrate the Romanian victory. The memorial grave of the Unknown Soldier, which was inaugurated on 17 May 1923 in Bucharest, was 22-23. December 1958 to 26 October 1991 at the Mausoleum of Mărăşeşti. It is back to its original position today.

King Milan I of Serbia was born in Mărăşeşti on 22 August 1854.

The Romanian Railways Main Buzău - Mărăşeşti ( since 1881 ) and Bucharest - Galaţi - Roman ( since 1870 /72) run over Mărăşeşti.
