Marble electric ray (Torpedo marmorata )

The marble electric ray (Torpedo marmorata ) is a ray species from the family of electric ray. Other designations used elsewhere are Marbled electric ray, Torpedo Rays Marbled or just electric ray, the latter can lead to confusion with other types of Torpedinidae family.

Properties

The species is known for the ability to produce electrical discharges of up to 220 volts to stun prey such as small fish and crustaceans. Marble Torpedo are nocturnal hunters, the day often dig in the sand of the sea floor, so that only the eyes and the respiratory hole left uncovered. Mostly they stay near reefs or in brackish water in deep regions of close to the surface to 370 m depth. The largest specimens are up to one meter long and three kilograms.

Dissemination

Marble torpedo coming for example in the eastern Atlantic in North Britain, at the Cape of Good Hope ( South Africa) and in the Mediterranean.
