Marcel Dupré

Marcel -Jean- Jules Dupré ( May 3, 1886 in Rouen, † May 30, 1971 in Meudon ) was a French composer, organist, pianist and music teacher.

Life

Macel Dupré was born in Rouen, the son of Albert Dupré and Marie- Alice Chauvière. The father, a pupil of Alexandre Guilmant, taught as a music teacher at the Lycée Corneille and was organist at the church of St -Ouen de Rouen. The mother was a pianist and pupil of Aloys Klein. 1893 Dupré received by his father his first music lessons. Three months later, he played for the first time publicly at a wedding in Elbeuf the organ. In 1894 he was eight years old when an encounter with the organ builder Aristide Cavaillé- Coll, who for a walk along the Seine took with him while the parents were rehearsing for an organ consecration. 1896 witnessed his organ playing Louis Vierne in Saint- Valéry -en- Caux. 1902 - at the age of 16 years - Dupré began his studies at the Paris Conservatory. He studied piano with Louis Diémer (1843-1919) and later organ with Alexandre Guilmant, who had already formed his father Albert Dupré ( 1860-1940 ). Dupré also studied composition with Charles -Marie Widor. In 1934 he was Widor's successor as organist at the great Cavaillé -Coll organ of St- Sulpice de Paris.

He created an extensive body of work for organ, became a teacher of many well known personalities such as organist Olivier Messiaen, Marie- Claire Alain, Pierre Cochereau, Jeanne Demessieux and Jean -Jacques Grunenwald, and coined the organ style and quality of the organists of his time.

Dupré's oeuvre includes around one hundred works for piano, organ, orchestra, chorus and chamber music, with some early works were not yet published. However, his compositional focus was the organ. A brilliant concert organist and improviser Dupré made ​​numerous concert tours worldwide.

Besides his work as a composer, he also emerged as editor of the organ works of Johann Sebastian Bach, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Handel, but also edited works by César Franck, Robert Schumann, Felix Mendelssohn and Franz Liszt.
