Marcelle Deschênes

Marcelle Deschênes ( born March 2, 1939 in Price, Quebec ) is a Canadian composer.

Life and work

Marcelle Deschênes studied from 1963 to 1967 at the University of Montreal with Jean Papineau - Couture and Serge Garant and continued her studies in Paris at the Groupe de Recherches Musicales François Bayle under, Henri and Guy Reibel Chiarucci continued. In 1969 she took part in a collective work of the Group de Recherches, Musiques éclatées, which was performed at the Festival d' Avignon.

From 1968 to 1970 she took courses in music and audio-visual technology with Pierre Schaeffer at the Paris Conservatory and studied musical analysis at the École César - Franck Olivier Alain. She then studied music aesthetics with Daniel Charles, ethnomusicology at Claude Laloum and analysis with Jean- Étienne Marie at the University of Paris and additionally ethnomusicology at the École pratique des hautes études at the Musée des Arts et Traditions Populaires.

Upon her return to Canada in 1971, Deschênes involved in the collective work of Si ... long temps, which was performed at the University of Montreal in the following year. From 1972 to 1977 she taught at the Studio for Electronic Music of Laval University and participated in the construction of the sound library. She composed music for experimental video films and the NFB film Le Port de Montréal and took 1974-1976 to the performances of the group GIMEL ( Groupe d' interprétation de musique de Laval Electroacoustique ) part.

In 1977 she was one of the founding members of the ACREQ ( Association pour la création et la recherche électroacoustiques du Québec ) and in 1979 she founded the electroacoustic studio Bruit Blanc. The following year, she became a professor for electroacoustic composition at the University of Montreal.

Among the works of Deschênes, there are multimedia performances, installations, video productions, electroacoustic and instrumental music as well as actions with non-musicians. She has received numerous international awards, including several times prices at the Concours International de Musique Electroacoustique de Bourges.
