Marcello Bacciarelli

Marcello Bacciarelli ( born February 16, 1731 in Rome, † January 5, 1818 in Warsaw) was an Italian painter of the Baroque and Classicism.

Life and work

Bacciarelli began his studies in Rome and had his first orders in Dresden at the court of Friedrich August II of Saxony. In 1756 he visited Warsaw and made a first acquaintance with Stanisław August Poniatowski, who later became king of Poland. 1764 was a trip to Vienna, where he also met the Empress Maria Theresa and there found employment. From 1766 he remained permanently in Poland. In this period (1776-1785) he operated a studio in the castle and there also arose the paintings in the Royal Castle in Warsaw, there are still issued today. The wall paintings in the great hall and marble rooms have been created by him.

In 1816 Bacciarelli was honorary appointed professor at the Royal University of Poland. In addition, he was also made ​​an honorary member of the Academies of Fine Arts in Dresden, Vienna and Berlin. In 1818 he died in Warsaw.
