Marcus Kann

Marcus May (* 1820 in Vienna, † February 3, 1886 ) was an Austrian chess player.

Horatio Caro had published in the journal Brotherhood in 1886 an analysis of what became known as the Caro- Kann Defence ( 1.e2 -e4 c7 - c6). Previously, Can had in Hamburg 1885 German -British chess master Jacques Lousy just defeated with the Caro- Kann Defence in only 17 trains during the fourth congress of the German Chess Federation. This game from the free tournament won by Can was added to the tournament book while his games, unpublished stayed out of the main tournament, where he failed to qualify for the winners group with four points from seven games. The German chess magazine (1886, p 128) dedicated to him after his death a short obituary.
