Marcus Marius Gratidianus

Marcus Marius Gratidianus († November 82 BC) was the nephew of Gaius Marius, a relative of Marcus Tullius Cicero and brother of Lucius Sergius Catilina.

Life

Marcus Marius Gratidianus was the son of Marcus Gratidius from Arpinum and a sister of Gaius Marius; he himself was adopted by his brother Marcus Marius. 87 BC he started under his uncle Marius the official career as a tribune of the people. As such, he complained Quintus Catulus Lutatius as traitors and drove him to suicide so.

In the years 85 and 84 BC held Gratidianus probably twice in succession, the praetorship, and issued an edict that inferior denarii should be reviewed and withdrawn from circulation. He gained great popularity among the people and quasi- divine worship. Seneca speaks of drink and food offerings to his still images.

During this time a dispute between him and a Gaius Sergius Orata drops by a house sale, Cicero commented.

83-82 BC Gratidianus was possibly as propraetor in Sicily. In November of the year 82 BC Sulla defeated in the Battle of the Colline Gate, the followers of Marius and was appointed dictator for " law and restoration of the State " appointed. On Sulla's command Marcus Marius Gratidianus of Catiline was tortured to death at the grave of Catulus.
