Marcus Valerius Messalla Appianus

Marcus Valerius Messala Barbatus Appianus († 12 BC ) was a Roman politician and senator.

Messallas biological father was Appius Claudius Pulcher, consul in 38 BC Marcus Valerius Messala, who had been consul in 32 BC, is probably his adoptive father. By 14 BC Messalla married Claudia Marcella the younger, the daughter of Octavia Minor and Gaius Claudius Marcellus, with whom he had a son, Marcus Valerius Messala barbatus, the father of Valeria Messalina, the wife of the emperor Claudius. Messalla died during his consulship in 12 BC, the year in which his daughter Claudia Pulchra, the later wife of Quinctilius Varus, was born. Further details of his political career are not known.
