Margaret Atwood

Margaret Eleanor Atwood, CC, O.Ont, FRSC ( born November 18, 1939 in Ottawa, Canada ) is a Canadian writer and poet. She writes novels, essays, short stories and poetry.

Life and work

Margaret Atwood spent her early childhood in Ottawa, Quebec and Ontario, until her father, an entomologist 1946 took place at the University of Toronto, where she lived until her college degree at Victoria College. After studying English language and literature at the University of Toronto and Harvard University, from which she graduated in 1961, she taught from 1964 as a literary scholar at various universities. She lived in the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Italy and Germany. She now lives in Toronto. She is married to the writer Graeme Gibson and has one daughter.

In addition to her teaching career, she published his own literary work; initially it was perceived mainly as a poet, and later as a literary critic. In 1969 her first novel, The Edible Woman (The Edible Woman ) appeared. For her novel The blind assassin ( The Blind Assassin ) received Atwood in 2000, the Booker Prize and the 2001 Hammett Prize of the North American Branch of the International Association of Crime Writers ( IACW / NA). In 2008, she was honored in Spain for her life's work with the Prince of Asturias Award. For her life's work, she was awarded the 2009 Nelly Sachs Prize of the city of Dortmund.
