Margaret of France, Duchess of Berry

Margaret of Angoulême ( born June 5, 1523 Saint- Germain -en- Laye, † September 4, 1574 in Turin) was a daughter of King Francis I of France and Claude de France.

Life and work

On July 9, 1559, she married in Paris the Duke Emmanuel Philibert of Savoy († August 30, 1580 in Turin) and thereby gained the title of Duchess of Berry and peer of France. The marriage served to reaffirm the reconciliation of her brother Henry II with Emanuel Philibert and was part of the Peace of Cateau -Cambrésis.

Due to the age of Margaret walked out of the marriage only one child out:

  • Duke Charles Emmanuel I the Great of Savoy (1562-1630) ∞ Katharina Michaela from Spain

Margaret and Emanuel Philibert were buried in the Cathedral of San Giovanni in Turin.
