Margarito Teves

Margarito " Gary " B. Teves ( born August 1, 1943) is a Filipino politician.

Biography

After school he studied at the Complutense University of Madrid and graduated in 1961 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA ) from. He then completed a post -graduate studies at the University of London College, from which he graduated in 1965 with a degree in business studies. He then completed a further post-graduate studies at Williams College in Massachusetts, USA in 1968 and earned a Master of Science ( M.Sc.) in development economics.

Margarito Teves was President of the Philippine Economic Society ( Philippine Economic Society), member of the Makati Business Club, Founder of the Community Planning Society ( Corporate Planning Society of the Philippines ) and trustee ( Trustee ) of the Philippine Futuristics Society.

Teves began his political career in July 1987 with the election to the House of Representatives ( Kapulungán ng mga ng Pilipinas Kinatawán or Mababang Kapulungan ng Kongreso ). In this he represented until June 1998, the interests of the constituency III (3rd District), the province of Negros Oriental. Successor as deputy was his father Herminio Teves.

During his membership in the House of Representatives, he was chairman of the Committees on Rural Development and Economic Affairs and several other Standing Committees and Special Committees.

As a parliamentarian, he was the initiator of several important laws in the area of ​​finance and business. These included the liberalization of entry and expansion of the activities of foreign banks in the Philippines ( Republic Act 7221 ), the so-called Magna Carta for Small Enterprises ( Republic Act 6911 ) and the amendment to the law with respect to patents, trademarks and copyright ( Republic Act 8293 ). In addition, he introduced a draft amendment to the National Income Tax Law ( National Internal Revenue Code ) and the establishment of the so-called Overseas Investment Fund, which should contribute incentives for the provision of foreign workers as well as for the reduction of foreign debt.

He was also one of the initiators of the new law for the central bank ( Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas ) ( Republic Act 7653 ), the Law on the formation of the Cooperative Development Authority ( Cooperative Development Authority ) ( Republic Act 6939 ) and the Law on the restructuring of excise duty on petroleum products ( Republic Act 8184 ).

Between July 1998 and August 2000, he was Chairman and Chief Executive Officer ( CEO) of the Economic Development Agency Think Tank, Inc.

On 1 September 2000, he took over the post of president and CEO of the Land Bank of the Philippines, the fourth largest bank in the Philippines and largest bank owned by the state. He was also CEO of subsidiary People's Credit and Finance Corporation and the Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation. In addition, was a member of the Council of the National Erhährungsbehörde ( National Food Authority), the Food Terminal Inc., and board member of the Manila Electric Company ( Meralco ) and Phil Equity Incorporated.

Margarito Teves was appointed on 12 July 2005 by President Gloria Macapagal- Arroyo as finance minister ( Secretary of Finance) in her cabinet and heard this on since then.

In 2009 he was selected by the London-based business magazine "The Banker" "Best Finance Minister of Asia."
