Margie Hyams

Marjorie " Margie " Hyams ( born August 9, 1920 in New York City; † June 14, 2012 in Monrovia ( California)) was an American Vibraphonistin, pianist and arranger of modern jazz.

Life and work

Hyams grew up in Queens; her brother Mark was also active as a jazz musician. She performed with his own band on in Atlantic City when she was discovered by Woody Herman. In the second half of the 1940s she was then a major figure in the American jazz scene. 1944/45, she was a member of Herman's band First stove. From 1945 to 1948 Hyams led his own trio, the temporarily Tal Farlow belonged. They also made ​​recordings with Flip Phillips, Charlie Ventura and Mary Lou Williams; with it she entered 1947 in a pure women - big band in New York's Carnegie Hall. Hyams played from 1949 to 1950 in George Shearing Quintet. They never led a recording session under his own name. Margie Hyams ' career ended in 1950, when she decided at the age of 27 years for the marriage with trumpeter Rolf Ericson. According to the then existing gender role she had to retire from the music business, but still taught.
