María Izquierdo

María Izquierdo (born 30 October 1902 in San Juan de los Lagos, Jalisco, † December 3, 1955 in Mexico City) was a Mexican painter.

Life

Her name was María Izquierdo Cenobia Gutierrez. Her father died when she was 5 years old. Then she lived with her grandparents until her mother remarried and they moved to Coahuila. The village life with its customs and traditions shaped their lives in childhood. She was forced into marriage at the age of 14 and had three children. At 26 she was already divorced.

She spent one year at the Escuela de Bellas Artes de San Carlos. Her teacher was Germán Gedovius, a portrait - painter, who was familiar with the German Romanticism. 1929 Diego Rivera was appointed director of the Academy. When a student exhibition Diego Rivera of her paintings was thrilled. He was the first who promoted it. Later, she had a close, even personal relationship with Rufino Tamayo, who had a great influence on her personal work. At the time she turned to the Surrealitischem style.

In 1938 she met the Chilean painter Raúl Uribe, with whom they contracted. Now they also frequented the circles of politicians and diplomats. As she painted on behalf of them, their playful style was more realistic.

Work and significance

At 28, she gave her first exhibition. She was also the first Mexican woman who had an exhibition in the United States. Later she was also in Tokyo, Paris and in several Latin American countries such as Chile. So she helped the art of Mexico to post worldwide.

Her style is known as "the other Mexican painting", which had a great influence with which she was a close friend of the Mexican muralists like Diego Rivera and David Alfaro Siqueiros. It is a blend of primitivism and popular elements, often presented in a dream land or still life, with bold bright colors, usually green, dark red and yellow.

Like many of the painters of her time, she wanted to hold the Mexican customs and traditions. Known are their pictures from the altar of the Holy Dolores, an altar is set up on the Friday before Easter in many households, such as in San Miguel de Allende, where it becomes a competition.

In 1943, she exhibits 60 of her pictures in the Salón Verde from the Palacio de Bellas Artes and they shall be appointed for best modern painter in Mexico.

2005 all of her pictures have been officially declared by the Mexican government for " national treasure ".

An impact crater on Mercury was named after María Izquierdo, 2009.
