Maria Müller

Maria Müller ( born January 29, 1898 in Theresienstadt, † March 13, 1958 in Bayreuth ), was a soprano.

Life

Beginning

Maria Müller was born in 1898 in Bohemia Terezin. She was educated at the Prague Conservatory and in Vienna with Erik Schmedeswurth. In 1919, she debuted at the Linz Opera House as Elsa in Lohengrin by Richard Wagner. It was followed by engagements in Brno, at the German Theatre in Prague and at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich. Already here Maria Müller sang primarily Wagner, the core of their repertoire.

Metropolitan Opera

On January 21, 1925, she entered the first time at the Metropolitan Opera in New York as Sieglinde in Die Walküre on. She sang in several world and European premieres as with the U.S. premiere of the Madonna imperia of Franco Alfano (8 February 1928), Fra Gherardo of Ildebrando Pizzetti (29 March 1929), Schwanda the Bagpiper of the Czech- American composer Jaromir Weinberger (7 November 1931) and Simon Boccanegra (29 January 1932).

Berlin

1926 was engaged at the Städtische Oper Berlin Maria Müller Bruno Walter. Later she joined the Staatsoper Unter den Linden. Maria Müller had an extensive opera and Liederepertoire, but gained particular importance as a Wagner interpreter.

Bayreuth

In 1930 she made ​​her debut in Bayreuth under Arturo Toscanini in the role of Elisabeth in Tannhäuser and the Singers' Contest at Wartburg. By 1939, she joined the Richard Wagner Festival in Bayreuth, for example, in 1933 as Eva in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg or 1936 as Sieglinde in Die Walküre and as Elsa in Lohengrin. A critic for the New York Herald Tribune in 1936 ruled her appearance in Bayreuth: " Müller's voice is fresh and more beautiful than at the Metropolitan. " The last time she sang in Bayreuth at the Festival in 1944.

Other roles

At the Salzburg Festival she sang in 1931 Eurydice, 1933 Rezia in Oberon and 1934 Donna Elvira. At the Covent Garden Opera, she debuted in 1934 as Eva in Die Meistersinger and sang 1937 Sieglinde in Die Walküre. Her repertoire included also starred in The Egyptian Helena, Jenufa, Iphigenie in Iphigenie en Tauride, Djula in Ero the rogue Jakov Gotovac, Pamina in The Magic Flute, Tosca and Marguerite in Gounod's Faust. As a recital singer Müller frequently occurred together with the pianist Sebastian Peschko.

She was married to actor Carl W. Tetting.

After the end of World War II Maria Müller lived in her last years in Bayreuth. She was buried at the city cemetery in Bayreuth. Her grave was between the tombs of Franz Liszt and Wagner family. The care of the tomb was taken over by the city of Bayreuth since 1983. The grave was disbanded in the spring of 2011.
