Maria Pia De Vito

Maria Pia De Vito ( born August 17, 1960 in Naples) is an Italian jazz musician (vocals, composition, arrangement ).

Life and work

Pia de Vito began after classes in opera and contemporary vocal in 1976 as a singer and guitarist (and later as a pianist ). In groups that were dedicated to the music of the Mediterranean and the Balkans Since 1980 she continues as a singer deal with jazz. She has worked with musicians such as John Taylor, Ralph Towner, Kenny Wheeler, Enrico Rava, Paolo Fresu, Gianluigi Trovesi, Henning Sieverts, Joe Zawinul, Michael Brecker, Miroslav Vitouš, Dave Liebman, Joshua Redman, Cameron Brown, Billy Hart, Gary Bartz Steve Turré, and the Art Ensemble of Chicago collaborated. Between 1994 and 1997, it has the fusion of Neapolitan songs and other Mediterranean melodies explored with pianist Rita Marcotulli in the project Nauplia with jazz. In recent years she has frequently collaborated with the British composer Colin Towns and also recorded with his Mask Orchestra; in Giorgio Gaslinis ugliness ducklings she has had a major role. Tumulti is a duo project with percussionist Patrice Héral. With their songs from the Underground she deals with songs by Leonard Cohen, Jimi Hendrix, Elvis Costello, Joni Mitchell and Sting.

De Vito has occurred at numerous festivals in South and Central Europe and the British Isles, but also concerts at Birdland or Performing Theatre of New York City. She also works together with the sculptor and video artist Marisa Albanese.
