Maria Saal

Maria Saal ( Gospa Sveta slo. ) is a market town with 3836 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013 ) and a place of pilgrimage in the district of Klagenfurt-Land in Carinthia. The place is known especially for its St. Mary's Church.

Geography

Geographical location

The village of Maria Saal is highly visible on a hill in the east of the customs field, a ten kilometer long valley of the Glan between Magdalen Berg and Ulrich Mountain, the north adjoins Klagenfurt. The municipality extends on both sides of the Customs field and is traversed by Glan and Raba.

History

In the 1st century AD by the Roman Emperor Claudius, the provincial capital Virunum at Magdalen mountain created as a successor settlement of around 15 BC built Celtic capital Noreia in the province of Noricum in the customs field.

The first Christianization of the area by about 300 came from the Patriarchate of Aquileia, where Virunum became a bishopric. To 590 occupied and settled Slavs of Carinthia, and parts of present-day provinces of Styria and Salzburg; Virunum was 591 last time called. The capital of the Principality of them justified here had his seat of government (Curtis Carantana ) in Karnburg at the foot of the mountain Ulrich; Today Karnburg is the community associated village, a few kilometers southwest of the present village of Maria Saal.

767 Before the Salzburg Bishop Virgil of Chorbishop Modestus sent with clerics after Karantania. Thus was initiated by Maria Saal from the second Christianisation in Carinthia.

Karnburg was later the capital of the Duchy of Carinthia Arnulf of Carinthia here had an imperial palace. In Karnburg the Dukes of Carinthia were used at the Prince's Stone, then blessed in built in the 8th century, under Modestus St. Mary's Church in Maria Saal. In the 9th century, the Duke chair was built, where the Duke the stands the oath fief awarded and administered justice.

In the second half of the 15th century St. Mary's Church was built a fortress to protect the farmers in the invasions of the Turks in Carinthia. After a fire, it was rebuilt in the years 1670-1674 again, and in 1687 poured Mathias native of abandoned guns of the Turks a 6608 kg heavy bell; Maria Saalerin is the largest bell in Carinthia and sounds in the strike note fis0.

1859 Maria Saal came to the diocese of Gurk Gurk, becoming the respective bishop also provost of Maria Saal.

In 1930 the village was raised to market.

Population

According to the 2001 census, the municipality Maria Saal 3838 inhabitants, of which 96.7 % have Austrian citizenship.

For the Roman Catholic Church to 83.7 % of the community population profess the Protestant Church 4.0% and Islam 1.0%. Without religious beliefs are 9.0 % of the population.

  • Parish Church of St. Lambert in Pörtschach on the mountain. The church was founded by the first Duke of Carinthia Otto I; originally a monastery was planned at this location. The present church is a Baroque style Romanesque choir church tower with a powerful, baroque onion dome on the east side, and a simple, covered the west portal.

Regular events

While held annually since 2002, ten-day International Sculpture Symposium in Maria Saal renowned artists work from the Alps -Adriatic area public and "open air" in the center of Maria Saal and numerous artistic events in various branches of art are held. The public can watch at this time the creative process of the artist, get in touch with them and renew thereby gaining access to the visual arts or deepen. Work is done around the cathedral, in which also - another example of contemporary art - the religious frescoes (1925 ) by the Austrian painter Herbert Boeckl can be visited.
