The peninsula on which now stands the Gothic pilgrimage church until 1770 was an island, which is still recognizable in the Slovenian name for the location, because " Otok " means " island ".

To a 875 St. Mary's Church was built on the highest point of the island, where the relics of the martyrs Primus and Felician were buried. After the dissolution of the monastery by the Jesuits Millstaetter ban from 1773 and after 1809 the monastery was opened in St. Paul again, you gave this Maria Wörth and the rule Leonstein Pörtschach.

With the Glanfurt an artificial outflow of Lake Wörthersee in 1770 created, dropped the water level of the lake and Maria Wörth was the peninsula.
