Green in and around Mariakerke

Mariakerke and particularly Mariakerke East has long remained a rural, swampy area around the rivers Durme, Kale and Lieve. The green character of Mariakerke is determined not only by the many country houses with connected parks, but also through the nature reserve Bourgoyen - Ossemeersen.

Like many villages and towns also Mariakerke has been beset in recent decades by some roads. Even more Mariakerke is cut by the Belgian N9, but since the last few decades by the Ghent ring R4, which now represents the actual boundary Mariakerkes the north and west.

One of the most well-known green spots Mariakerkes is the " Pisbosje " close to the N9. It belongs to the park at Van Tieghemkasteel (now Roelandpark was told ). This park was cut in half by the bridge Mariakerkes. The smallest part to the northwest is about an acre in size and has since 1990 been a few times to see in the news. At the beginning of the nineties, there were plans of the then owner ( with the support of the city government ) here to clear everything and build a hamburger restaurant (hence the nickname " Hamburgerbosje "). After numerous protests by local residents and youth associations, the city of Ghent decided to get this piece of greenery and an expropriation plan was drawn up. In 2007 there were plans but again the area to exploit, since the expropriation plan had expired and the successive city governments had failed to make anything of the plan. The play park surrounding the Service Centre was established by the Ghent city government probably bought, but there was no money provided for the purchase of " Hamburgerbosjes " to which one would therefore now need to allow development. New protests have prompted city officials to hang on a nail and the plans of emergency reserves to make use of this piece of land to buy yet.
