Mariana, Corsica

Mariana was an ancient city on the island of Corsica. She lay on the plateau of La Marana on the side of the river Guola, near the north coast of the island. The town was about two miles from the sea.

The eminent Roman statesman and commander Gaius Marius had to create around 100 BC as a colony of veterans Mariana. Near La Canonicas was the decumanus ( the east-west axis) of the city, which included a portico. Here there were several shops and houses from the imperial period. To the west and east of the city center there are Roman Iron Age necropolis. Tombs of the republican settlement have not yet been found, but their existence is assured by the discovery of coins and black-painted ceramics.

Mariana was the seat of many bishops.
