Mariana is a city in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais.

Location

Mariana is located on the so -called " gold circle ", in the central tourist area of Minas Gerais in the neighborhood of the famous World Heritage Site Ouro Preto. As well as this the appearance Marianas is strongly influenced by the Brazilian Baroque.

Unlike in Ouro Preto, the city is tranquil and less touristy with about 50,000 inhabitants.

History

Mariana was (according to other sources 1703) founded in 1696 on the banks of the river Ribeirão do Carmo and was the first capital of Minas Gerais. Some years later the village was the village, and in 1745 a town. It was named after Dona Maria Ana Mariana D' Austria, wife of Dom João V
