Mariano Etkin

Mariano Etkin ( born November 5, 1943 in Buenos Aires ) is an Argentine composer and music educator.

Etkin studied in Buenos Aires with David Epstein, Guillermo Graetzer and Julian Emilio Martini, then at the Juilliard School of Music in New York with Luciano Berio, Pierre Boulez in Basel with, in Siena with Franco Ferrara and Alberto Ginastera at, Maurice Le Roux, Roger Sessions, Iannis Xenakis, Earle Brown and Mario Davidovsky. At the University of Utrecht in 1968-69, he took classes in electronic music with Gottfried Michael Koenig.

Since 1989, Etkin is a visiting professor at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague. In 1991 he was Inauguralprofessor at the Simon Bolivar Chair of Composition in Caracas. Since 1992 he has also taught at the Darmstadt Summer Courses. Several times he taught as a visiting professor at McGill University in Canada composition and music theory. In addition he gave lectures, among others at the State University of Music and Performing Arts in Stuttgart ( 1989), the Musikhögskolan Stockholm, the Folkwang Music School in Essen, the University of Arts in Berlin (1997) and at the Conservatory of Music in Biel. He is currently professor of composition and music analysis at the Universidad Nacional de La Plata.

He composed mainly works for chamber orchestra and piano pieces, besides also acting and film scores. He has also written a large number of music theory and aesthetic essays for various magazines.
