Mariatorget

The Mariatorget (German Marienplatz) is a small city park in Södermalm, Stockholm, erected in the late 1760s. Originally called the place torg Adolf Fredrik ( Adolf- Friedrich-Platz ), named after King Adolf Frederick, but was renamed in 1959 Mariatorget to avoid confusion with the Fredrikskyrkan Adolf ( Adolf Fredrik church) in Norrmalm. The new name refers to the nearby Mariakyrka ( Marienkirche ).

Just north of the park, the road Hornsgatan, south street S: t Paulsgatan along. The Swedenborgsgatan, named after Emanuel Swedenborg, starts here and heads south. A bust of Swedenborg is placed in the park. The fountain in the center of the square is " fiske Gate " by a 1903 erected sculpture called by Anders Henrik Wissler crowned and will represent the Scandinavian god Thor and shows how he killed the sea serpent Jörmungandr.

The small Methodist church S: t Paulskyrkan is at the southwestern end of the square. It is the oldest Methodist movement in Sweden. The consecration of the church in 1876, the altar adornments created in 1894 in the course of renovation work by Wilhelm Gernandt.

Around the park, there are some cafes and bars. The Cafe & Hotel " Rival ", which was a cinema until recently, is partly owned by the ABBA singer Benny Andersson.

Metro station

The station of Stockholm Tunnelbana called Mariatorget is nearby, but neither of the two staircases leading directly onto the square. The station is located on the Red Line and was opened on 4 April 1964 as a 48th station of the entire subway network. The lines 13 and 14 pass through this station. In the subway station there is a small sculpture called " Människa och pelare " by Asmund Arle. The sculpture has been stolen at least eight times.
