Mariatrost Basilica

The Basilica of the Virgin birth, also the parish and pilgrimage church of Maria Trost - Graz, is a location in Graz- Maria Trost on Purberg Catholic Church. Built in the Baroque style building, which also includes the former Pauline or Franciscan Maria Trost heard one of the most important pilgrimage sites of Styria.

History

Maria Trost is one of the most important Marian pilgrimage sites of Styria. Destination of the pilgrims who came from Austria, Hungary and Croatia, was a miraculous statue of Mary, who came from the pen clean at Graz and stood in the chapel of the Purbergschlössls. The owner of the property, Franz Caspar Conduzi, it gave in 1708 to the Order of the Pauline.

1714 was placed after the official recognition as a place of pilgrimage, the foundation stone for the church and started under Andreas Stengg with his son Johann Georg Stengg the building. Five years later the first church services were held. Emperor Charles VI. prompted the construction of a road from Graz to Maria Trost to improve the accessibility of the place. The shell of the church was completed in 1724. However, the full completion lasted until, 1779. Few years later had the Pauline Maria Trost leave because of the Josephine reforms.

From the monastery and pilgrimage church became a parish church and the monastery tracts sold to a butcher were converted into stables. Between 1846 and 1996, the Franciscans led the pilgrimage. In October 1968, the Mariatroster statement was published in the basilica. After the Order left the monastery in 1996, the parish has since been performed by priests of the Diocese of Graz- Seckau. The boom culminated on 28 October with the appointment of Church of the Minor Basilica by Pope John Paul II is why a comprehensive overall renovation of the facility took place.

Description

The Sanctuary is at Purberg (from " Castle Hill ", 469 m asl ) in the north- eastern part of Graz. It is accessible via the Angelus staircase with 216 steps.

The basilica is attributable to the high form of the Emperor Baroque. Two four-storey façade towers (61 m) and a dome are widely visible features of the structure of these cross-domed church. It is by a former Pauline ( 1708-86 ) and later Franciscan monastery ( 1842-1996 ) included. At the height of the last third of the Angelus stairs is one from Graz artist Erwin Huber in 2000 established, medium -size bronze sculpture of the Annunciation Angel Gabriel.

Shaping

The church building with two four-storey façade towers is integrated between the wings of the monastery. In the nave of the basilica perched a central dome. There are chapels on both sides. The model for the church is the Roman Jesuit church Il Gesù.

At the center of the high altar stands a late Gothic statue of Mary from 1465, which comes from the pen clean and remodeled in 1695 by a baroque jacket by Bernhard True to grace mother. Above it is an inscription, which is carried by angels solatium vitae nostrae ( consolation of our lives ). The vaulted ceiling and the side walls of the church interior is richly decorated with frescoes. They were created by the artists of Luke Schram and Johann Baptist Scheidt and 1733-1754. In a presentation is reminiscent of the decisive victory of Austria over the Turks. The Emperor looks with his generals gratefully toward the sky. Angels hold the name Maria in her hands.

The dome fresco, the Virgin Mary is venerated as Queen of Heaven and haloed by the light of the Holy Spirit dove. The four evangelists are given in figures at Kuppelfuß and the Gewölbeauflagern the four Western Church Fathers: Gregory the Great, Jerome, Ambrose and Augustine. In the side chapels of the Basilica of the story of the pilgrimage site of Maria as a helper and comforter are shown.

The organ case is decorated with the figures of King David and of St. Cecilia. The pulpit was created by Veit Koniger, 1779. It is waiting to see ( heart) the representation of faith (cross), Hope ( Anchor ) and love. A similar pulpit can be found in the parish church Nestelbach bei Graz, which was also created by Koniger.

Below the Baslilka, in the upper third of the Angelus stairs, there is a medium- size bronze sculpture ( Annunciation ) of the jobs created by the Graz artist Erwin Huber Archangel Gabriel.
