Marie Carandini

Marie Carandini, Marchesa di Sarzano ( born 1 February 1826 in Brixton, London, † April 13, 1894 in Richmond Hill near Bath, Somerset, England) was a British opera singer (soprano ).

Life

Marie Burgess was the daughter of the London coachman James Burgess and his wife Martha. In 1833, her parents emigrated to Tasmania, Australia, from. In 1843, the 17- year-old Marie married the Italian emigrants and aristocrats Jerome Carandini, 10th Marchese di Sarzano ( 1803-1870 ). From the marriage, which by all accounts was happy, went five daughters and three sons, out. As of 1846, the couple lived in Sydney, where she received vocal training under Isaac Nathan and Lewis Henry Lavenu. Soon Carandini had an excellent reputation as a concert and opera singer in Australia. After the death of her husband she went on singing tour to New Zealand, India, the United States and Europe.

Marie Carandini, Marchesa di Sarzano died in 1894 from the effects of cancer in Richmond Hill in Barth and was buried there.

  • Her oldest daughter, Rosina Martha Hozanah Palmer (1844-1932), was also a celebrated opera singer (soprano ).
  • The actor Sir Christopher Frank Carandini Lee ( * 1922 ), known for his portrayal of Count Dracula, is a great-grandson of Marie Carandini.
