Marie Elisabeth, Abbess of Quedlinburg

Marie Elisabeth of Holstein- Gottorp (* March 21, 1678 in Hamburg, † July 17, 1755 in Quedlinburg ) was 1718-1755 Abbess of direct imperial and free secular Quedlinburg.

Life

Marie Elisabeth was a daughter of Duke Christian Albrecht of Schleswig -Holstein - Gottorp (1641-1695) and his wife Princess Friederike Amalie (1649-1704), daughter of King Frederick III. of Denmark.

In 1718, Marie Elisabeth was elected to the 37th abbess of Quedlinburg. Already tried since 1704 to enforce the choice of the Princess of Prussia governed the kingdom of England. The guided during the period of vacancy by Aurora of Königsmarck pen, though chose Marie Elisabeth repeatedly, but failed their inauguration to 1718 in the protests of Prussia and the non-confirmation of the election by the emperor.

Under Marie Elisabeth was an extensive expansion and renovation of the pin lock and the state rooms. Their term of office was marked by territorial disputes with King Friedrich Wilhelm I of Prussia, in which Marie Elisabeth vain appealed to the emperor.

On September 23, 1745 she was awarded by Empress Elizabeth the Order of St. Catherine.

The abbess was buried in the royal crypt of the Collegiate Church of St. Servatius.
