Marie Under

Marie Under (born 15 Märzjul / March 27 1883greg in Tallinn, .. † 25 September 1980 in Stockholm ) was an Estonian poet.

Life

Marie Under was the daughter of school teacher Priidu (Friedrich) Under and his wife Leena Under ( born Kerner ) was born. The family came originally from the island of Hiiumaa. From 1891 to 1900, she attended the German girls' school in Tallinn. Marie Under the age of eleven began to write his first poems, at first mainly in German language. In 1902, she married Carl Hacker and worked as a bookseller. The family lived until 1906 in Moscow.

Funded by the painter Ants Laikmaa dedicated to Marie Under, more and more of poetry in Estonian. She was part of the beginning of the strong symbolism movement committed to Siuru. Already her first book of poems Sonetid ( " Sonnets " ) in 1917, a literary success. Her poems are characterized by a thirst for life and a devotion to love and nature. In 1927 she married the Estonian poet Artur Adson and became one of the most influential Estonian poets.

1944 Marie Under fled before the occupation of Estonia by the Soviet Union to Sweden. There mingled amplified sounds of homesickness to Estonia in their work. From 1945 to 1957 she worked at the Theatre Museum of Stockholm.
