Marinette is a city and county seat of Marinette County in the northeast of the U.S. state of Wisconsin. With 10,968 inhabitants ( as of 2010) is the largest city in Marinette County.

Geography

Marinette is located at 45 ° 5 ' north latitude and 87 ° 38 ' west longitude, covers 20.6 km ² ( 17.5 km ² of it land area) at an altitude of 182 meters above the sea level. The city is located on the south side of the Menominee River at the mouth of the Bay of Green Bay of Lake Michigan. To the north is the city of Menominee in Michigan.

The U.S. Highway 41 leads in a north-south direction through the city. The Wisconsin Highways 64 and 180 terminate in the city.

The city is connected to the network of the " Escanaba and Lake Superior Railroad " and to the route network of the Canadian National.

The Austin Straubel International Airport is located 80 kilometers southwest of the city.

The nearest large towns are Sturgeon Bay (about 50 km south-east on the other side of the Green Bay ), Iron Mountain (100 km to the northwest ) and Green Bay (about 85 km south-west ). Madison, the capital of the state is located about 300 km south-west and Chicago, the nearest big city, about 400 km south.

Demographic data

In the census of 2000 a population of 11,749 was determined. These distributed to 5095 households in 2973 families. The population density was 671.2 inhabitants per square kilometer. There were 5553 residential buildings, which corresponded to a housing density of 317.3 per square kilometer buildings.

The population was in 2000 from 97.4 percent white, 0.4 percent African American, 0.6 percent Native Americans, Asians 0.3 percent and 0.3 percent other. 0.9 percent said to be descended from at least two of these groups. 1.0 percent of the population consisted of Hispanics who belonged to the various of the aforementioned groups.

23.7 percent were under 18 years, 8.6 percent between 18 to 24, 27.1 percent of 25-44, 21.9 percent from 45 to 64 and 18.6 percent 65 and older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females were statistically 89.3 men in the over 18 -year-olds 85.1.

In July 2011, the mayor of Marinette, Robert Harbick was arrested for drunk driving by the police after he slammed into a street sign. After the police car video was officially released on the net, voices have been raised that Harbick should resign from his post.
