Mario Casariego y Acevedo

Mario Cardinal Casariego y Acevedo CRS ( born February 13, 1909 in Figueras de Castropol, Spain, † June 15, 1983 in Guatemala City ) was Archbishop of Guatemala.

Life

Mario Casariego occurred in 1924 in the Order of the Somaschi and studied in Bergamo, Genoa and San Salvador, the subjects of philosophy and Catholic theology. He received on 19 July 1936, the sacrament of Holy Orders, and then worked at the Institute La Ceiba in San Salvador, which he presided as rector from 1948 until 1954. From 1954 to 1957 he was an advisor of his order, from 1957 to 1958 he provided as the Provincial Government of the Order in Central America.

1958 he was appointed by Pope John XXIII. Titular Bishop of Pudentiana and auxiliary bishop in Guatemala. Pope Paul VI. put it in 1963 as Titular Archbishop of Perge and Coadjutor Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Guatemala one whose line Mario Casariego 1964 took over. He participated in the Second Vatican Council. In 1968, Mario Casariego was several days prisoner a terrorist group. In 1969, Pope Paul VI. as cardinal priest with the pro hac vice levied for the titular church of Santa Maria in Aquiro title diakonia in the College of Cardinals. Mario Casariego died on June 15, 1983 in Guatemala City and was buried in the local cathedral.
