Mário de Araújo Cabral

Mário Veloso de Araújo Cabral ( born January 15, 1934 in Cedofeita, Portugal ) is a former Portuguese racing driver.

Mário de Cabral was the outstanding racing driver of Portugal in the 1950s and 1960s. Cabral, who never aspired to a professional racing career, drove his first Formula 1 Grand Prix 1959. During the Grand Prix of Portugal, he drove a Cooper T51 Scuderia Centro Sud to tenth place.

The racing career was repeatedly interrupted by military operations ( Cabral was paratrooper in the Portuguese army). So he came only occasionally races. Twice he went for the Scuderia Centro Sud in Formula 1 at the start, in Italy in 1964, he played the race with the inferior Derrington - Francis ATS100. Points for the world championship he could not achieve.

In 1965, Cabral injured in a Formula 2 race at Rouen in an accident so severe that his career seemed over. In 1968 he returned, however, and drove sports car racing until the mid- 1970s. Among other things, he drove the Porsche 917 by David Piper.
