Mario Echandi Jiménez

Mario Echandi Jiménez ( born June 17, 1915 in San Jose, † July 30, 2011 ibid ) is a Costa Rican politician ( PUN ). From 1958 to 1962 he was President of Costa Rica.

Life

Mario Echandi Jiménez was the son of Josefa Jiménez and Alberto Rucavado Echandi Montero. He attended school Liceo de Costa Rica and the Escuela de Derecho. Professionally, he then worked as a lawyer. In 1940 he was military attaché in Panama, then ambassador in Washington DC and 1949-1950 Ambassador to the United Nations and the Organization of American States. He was a member of the Partido Unión Nacional. From 1950 to 1952, Echandi Foreign Minister in the government of Otilio Ulate Blanco.

In his tenure as president of Costa Rica from 1958 to 1962, the Instituto Costarricense de Acueductos y Alcantarillados were founded, passed a law for Christmas money and broke off diplomatic relations with Cuba. From 1966 to 1968 he was again ambassador in Washington.

1970 and 1982 he appeared again in the presidential election, but was defeated.

Mario Echandi Jiménez was married to Olga De Benedictis Antonelli. He died on 30 July 2011 at the age of 96 years.
