Marion Thees

Marion Thees, nee Trott ( born July 5, 1984 in Eisenach ) is a German skeleton pilot.

Career

Marion Thees began in 1996 when BRC 05 Friedrichroda with the luge. In 2001 she moved to the skeleton and made ​​her debut in January 2003 in the European Cup skeleton in a race in Koenigssee, where they immediately came as third-placed finish. Their second European Cup race in December of the year on their home track in Altenberg they finished behind Julia Eichhorn as runner-up. There was a fourth place at the German Championships 2004 in Koenigssee, their best result so far in this competition. In the European Cup they reached behind Julia Eichhorn in season 2003/ 04 the second rank. Particularly successful were the European Cup in 2005/ 06 and 2006/ 07, which she won for thees. These included four European Cup races won during these four years, the first in November 2005 in Igls. In 2006 she was also German junior champion and third at the Junior World Championships in Igls. In her last season as a junior, she was again in 2007 German Junior Champion and Junior World Champion.

In the German Cup in Altenberg 2008, she finished third and thus qualified for the first time for the European and World Championships. After her first World Cup race in St. Moritz in 2005, in which she was 15, she contested the 2007/ 08 first full World Cup season. Her best result was a third place in Koenigssee, in the overall standings, she was ninth. In the Skeleton World Cup 2008, she finished seventh, ninth at the European Championships.

In the 2008 / 09 season, Thees could always put in the first five races of the season at single-digit ranks. A first medal at international championships won Thees at the Skeleton Championships 2009 in St. Moritz, where she came in second place behind Shelley Rudman. In the sixth race of the season in Whistler Thees celebrated her first victory in the World Cup. With a second place in the penultimate race of the season in Park City Thees took a surprise lead in the overall standings of the World Cup, which she won at the same place before Shelley Rudman and Katie Uhlaender with a win in the last race. In all races of the season Thees came at least in the top seven starters and thus had the best record of all World Cup participants of the season, in which they actually went as only third German starter behind Anja Huber and Kerstin Szymkowiak. The 2008/2009 season was crowned by winning the skeleton World Cup in February on the train from Lake Placid. They could each put up the fastest time in the first three runs, also managed to set up her a new track record. In addition, she won gold in the team competition, together with the skeleton pilot Frank Rommel and the two-man bob by Thomas Florschütz and Kiriasis.

At the Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver in 2010 she placed eighth.

In the season 2010/11 Thees get three podium finishes in the World Cup, including two victories. At the European Championships in 2011, she finished fourth. Again two gold medals in singles and with the team she won at the World Championships.

After she started the meantime for the BSR Rennsteig Oberhof, she returned again in 2011 back to their home club BRC 05 Friedrichroda.
