Mark Edmondson

Mark Edmondson (* June 24, 1954 in Gosford ) is an Australian former tennis player.

Career

The highest position he reached as a tennis player in the world rankings, No. 15 The greatest triumph was in 1982. During a tennis tournament was the victory in the men's singles at the Australian Open in 1976 against John Newcombe. At the time, Edmondson was only quoted ranked 212 in the world rankings, which he with the worst world ranking placement is still the Grand Slam winner at the time of his victory. He is also the last Australian who won the Australian Open.

In doubles, he could even win the Australian Open four times: in 1980 and 1981 with Kim Warwick, in 1983 with Paul McNamee and 1984 with Sherwood Stewart. In 1985, he was with Kim Warwick again in the final in Melbourne, but which they lost. In the same year he won with Warwick at the French Open, in 1983 he was in the finals yet failed at Roland Garros on the side of Sherwood Stewart. In Mixed he stood twice in a Grand Slam final: 1980 in Wimbledon with Dianne From Holtz and 1986 Roland Garros with Rosalyn Fairbank.

On the ATP tour title him six wins in the singles and 34 more tournament victories go beyond double.

Between 1977 and 1985, Edmondson played 19 matches for the Australian Davis Cup team. He won eleven of his 18 singles matches and eight of his eleven double batches. 1977 and 1983 he won the Davis Cup with the team. However, in the 1977 season he was only in the first two games used. 1983, however, he also played in the final of the doubles match against Sweden.
