Mark-Twain-Village

Mark Twain Village is an American settlement in the Heidelberg district of Southtown. It is next to the Patrick Henry Village, one of two American settlements for soldiers and their families in the city. Mark Twain Village is located next to Campbell Barracks, which housed the U.S. 7th Army (USAREUR ) and the Allied Land Forces Central Europe ( LANDCENT ) of NATO.

In the settlement of an Army & Air Force Exchange Service store, a library, a church, the Mark Twain Elementary School and Heidelberg High School, attended by all U.S. children and area attractions. The high school is attended by children from Mark Twain Village, and also from Patrick Henry Village, as the construction of a new school would be too expensive and, given the small number of students - about 600 - not worth it.

In 2003, after the attacks on 11 September 2001, the Mark Twain Village, as well as all the other facilities of the U.S. Army in Heidelberg, equipped with a fence and access, previously in the living areas each free, since then only possible through guarded entrances with a U.S. Army badge.

Some parts of the Mark Twain Village were returned in August 2006 to the city, which the U.S. Army about U.S. $ 1.8 million saved. The selling area was a bit off the actual settlement, which is why it appeared the Americans make sense to abandon this part. The houses have been renovated and are inhabited. The eastern half of the settlement was in January 2013, the western half is 2014 at the latest, together with the Campbell Barracks, will be handed over to the Federal Agency for Real Estate. In the development of concepts for future civil use this, the city of Heidelberg and the citizens of the city for an extended citizen participation are involved.
