Markovo, Chukotka Autonomous Okrug

Markowo (Russian Марково ) is a village ( selo ) in the Autonomous District of the Chukchi (Russia) with 809 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The place is located in the central part of Anadyrniederung on the right bank of the Anadyr.

Markowo is part of Rajon Anadyrski and located nearly 350 km as the crow flies west of the county and Rajonverwaltungszentrum Anadyr. It is the only town in the same rural community ( selskoje posselenije ).

History

Markowo located in the part of the region, which was settled because of its relatively favorable climatic conditions as the first of the Russians on their expansion to the east, albeit on a modest scale. In the previously inhabited only by nomadic Chukchi, Yukagirs and Evens area was in 1649 by the Cossack Semyon Deschnjow and a 1650 butted him department under Mikhail Staduchin about 20 km to the east ( downstream ) of the present village location on the opposite bank of the Anadyr the Anadyr Ostrog built (Russian Anadyrski ostrog, later also called Anadyrsk ).

The attachment was indeed abandoned in 1764, but meanwhile settled Russian population, in part with the indigenous people of ethnic group of Tschuwanen (also Tschuwanzen ) mixed, remained in the area and founded, among others, in 1840 the village Markowo. From 1930 to 1960 Markowo administrative seat of the eponymous Markowski was rayon. During the Second World War an airfield on the route was built in the village, on the aircraft from the United States were transferred to the Soviet Union under the Lend-Lease Agreement. From the 1960s to 1998 Markowo had the status of an urban-type settlement.

Traffic

Markowo is not connected to the fixed network of roads, but in winter on unpaved airfields accessible. A street of Anadyr and on to Omolon on the western border of the Autonomous Okrug is planned. From the place of Anadyr is considered navigable, and in the ice-free period is boat service.
