Markus Heikkinen ( born October 13, 1978 in Katrine Holm, Sweden) is a Finnish footballer who plays as a defensive midfielder or central defender.

Career

Markus Heikkinen began his adult career in 1996 in Oulu PS, from where he moved to Turku PS 1997. From 1998 to 1999 he played in the Finnish First Division at Myllykosken Pallo -47 before moving to HJK Helsinki for three years. From there, Heikkinen succeeded by a loan agreement the jump to the Premier League for Portsmouth, where he could hold but only for one year. Previously he was staying on loan at FC Viikingit. From 2003 he played in the Scottish League for two seasons at FC Aberdeen. From 2005 to 2007 he was at Luton Town in the English Football League Championship under contract. 2007 was the transfer to the Austrian record champions SK Rapid Wien. In his first season in Austria he could promptly win the Austrian Championship title.

Heikkinen had with his teammates always a nickname. So he was in England called at Luton Town Heineken ( after the namesake beer brand ), in Vienna at SK Rapid he has been nicknamed Mika ( Mika Hakkinen racing driver from ). Heikkinen denied 2002-2011 61 games in the Finnish national team. On September 26, 2011, he announced his retirement from the national team of his native country.
