Markus Niemelä

Markus Niemelä ( born March 20, 1984 in Rauma ) is a Finnish racing driver. His motorsport career has been marked by some injuries.

From 1998 to 2003, the young Finn was active in karting. Niemelä 2004 won the championship of the Swedish and Finnish Formula Ford The following year, Niemelä went to the German Formula BMW at the start and was seventh in the overall standings. In 2006, Niemelä in the British Formula Renault and was also seventh in this series. Niemelä 2007 drove in Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup and, after half a season in the GP2 Series for BCN Competición. As a replacement for Sakon Yamamoto starting the Finn injured already in his first race in the GP2 Series at the Hungaroring on the shoulder. After a break of a race weekend he was able to attend the last three race weekends again.

Niemelä 2008 moved to America in the Formula Atlantic. He won two races and took for Brooks Associates Racing starting the championship title in this series. In September Niemelä took part in testing the GP2 Series for Racing Engineering.
