Markus Rost

Markus Rost ( born 1958 in Nuremberg, Germany) is a German mathematician who deals with algebra and topology.

Stainless studied mathematics from 1977 at the Ruprecht -Karls- University of Heidelberg and from 1978 at the Ruhr- University Bochum (Diploma 1983). After that, he was at the University of Regensburg, where he. Received his doctorate in 1988 with Klaus Jänich (Figure defects in 4 -manifolds ) and his habilitation in 1995 ( Chow groups with coefficients ) From 2000 he was a professor at Ohio State University. He has been a visiting scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in Bonn (1992 to 1994) at the ETH Zurich ( from 1995 to 1997) and the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, (1999-2000 and 2004-2005). Since 2003 he is professor at the University of Bielefeld.

Rust proved a existence theorem for so-called standard varieties, which were introduced by Vladimir Wojewodski 1996 - Wojewodski led the Bloch- Kato conjecture back to the existence of such varieties, and rust completed the proof of the conjecture with his existence theorem. In 2002 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM ) in Beijing ( Standard Algebraic Varieties and Cobordism ). He is a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society.
