Marleen Gorris

Marleen Gorris (born 9 December 1948 in Roermond ) is a Dutch screenwriter and film director.

Life

Gorris studied English and theater studies at the universities of Groningen, Amsterdam and Birmingham. Coinciding with her ​​debut film of Silence Christine M. 1982 she made a breakthrough in their home country. The film was selected in the Netherlands at the best film of the year. Marleen Gorris had written the screenplay for the film, and originally wanted the Belgian filmmaker Chantal Akerman filmed the book. Following the success as a director, however, she remained faithful and continue in the new occupation filmed their own screenplays.

She experienced her greatest success in 1996 when her film Antonia's Line was awarded the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. It was also the first win by a woman in this category. Antonia was the definitive international breakthrough for the Dutch filmmaker, who then received the offer the novel Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf to film. The screenplay was written by this time the British Eileen Atkins and the main role was filled by Vanessa Redgrave.

In February 2006, Marleen Gorris was member of the jury at the Berlinale 2006.
