Marmoutier

The French community Marmoutier ( German: Maursmünster, often erroneously called " wall Münster " written ) is located in the department of Bas- Rhin in the Alsace region and has 2779 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011). Marmoutier is located about 35 km northwest of Strasbourg and nine kilometers south of Saverne / Saverne. It is the capital of the eponymous canton and a member municipality and seat of the Communauté de communes du Pays de Marmoutier.

History

In the year 590 St. founded. Leonhard, a student of St. Columbanus of Luxeuil, a Benedictine monastery. His name, however, it owes to the Abbot Maurus, of the monastery in the 12th century, rebuilt and reformed after Hirsauer model. From this period the Church of Marmoutier comes. Especially in the 14th century, there was a heyday of the monastery. 1792 it was resolved in the course of the French Revolution.

In the church of the monastery Marmoutier from the 11th century is an organ of the Strasbourg organ builder Andreas Silbermann.

Personalities

  • Leobard of Maursmünster († 680 ) was the first abbot of the monastery Maursmünster.
  • The name Maursmünster is still by the playwright and poet Schwank Jacob Frey (1520-1562) known, who lived from 1545 as town clerk and notary in the place.
  • Albert Kahn (1860-1940), wealthy banker and pioneer of color photography was born in Maursmünster / Marmoutier.
