Marondera ( until 1982 Marandellas ) is located 73 km south of Harare on the road and the railway line to Mutare in the province of Mashonaland East in Zimbabwe. Marondera is the capital of the province and is at its location at 1640 meters, the city with the highest altitude of Zimbabwe.

Marondera was founded in 1890 as a stop over. The place was first called Marandellas, after the local chieftain Barozwi over 100 years ago.

Here arises the largest river of the country, the Sava. The city was one of the first white settlements in the country, surrounded by fields, especially corn, tobacco and wine, some rubber plantations and is a traditionally an agricultural town.

It has about 40,000 inhabitants, is home to some light industry, primary and secondary schools, two colleges, a hospital. It is one of the very few places in Zimbabwe, where children are treated almost exclusively due to respiratory diseases by " smoke house " because of the slow withdrawing through the grass roof of the huts. Compared to other places is the idyllic conditions, especially if the situation is taken into account at the much frequented highway, which is everywhere else cause of the spread of AIDS.

The city has telephone, electricity and water supply, though not continuously, although two reservoirs are located near the city. There is a lack spare parts and foreign exchange. Fuels and food are scarce, as in the rest of the country.
