Marshall Defense

The Marshall defense of the Queen's Gambit is a chess opening. Your ECO code is D06.

It is named after the American chess Grandmaster Frank Marshall and begins with the moves:

Marshall turned to this way of playing in the tournament in Baden-Baden in 1925 and lost there a known match against Alexander Alekhine. White should 3.c4xd5! (on 3rd Nb1 - c3 Black can ... e7 - e6 by 3 in the Orthodox defense, using 3 ... c7 - c6 the Slav Defence, or by 3 ... g7- g6 in the green field Indian Defence proceed. Bc8 on 3 ... f5 follows? 4 answer Dd1 -b3 d5xc4 5 Db3xb7 Sb8 - d7 6 Db7 - c6). This opening is reminiscent in structure to the Queen's Gambit Accepted:

  • 3 ... Dd8xd5 of Tarrasch was recommended because of the similarity to the Scandinavian defense after 4 Nb1 - c3 - a5 Qd5. Over 5 Lc1 -d2 Qa5 - b6 6 Sg1 -f3 Db6xb2? 7 Ta1 -b1 -a3 Db2 8 Nc3 - b5 proves the farmer b2 as poisoned.
  • 3 ... 4 e2 -e4 Sf6xd5 ( as the most prestigious, quiet 4 Sg1 -f3 can be transferred from black with 4 ... c6 - Sb8 in the Chigorin Defence. Prevention of e2- e4 after 4.Nf3 Bf5 leads to a black concession after concession 5.Qb3. 4 g2 - g3 also quite possible ) 4 ... Nd5 - f6 ( possible is also 4 ... Nd5 - b6 with the idea after additional trains g7- g6 and g7 - Bf8 be reconciled in the Grünfeld Indian Defence ) 5 -d3 e7 - e5 Lf1. This pawn sacrifice, which also takes place on 5th Nb1 - c3, was Marshall's idea. 5 Nb1 - c3, however, does not interrupt the ladies effect on d4, so that goes well on e7 - e5 in this case 6 Sg1 -f3. After 6 d4xe5 Nf6 - g4 f2 f4 is 7 for 7 ... c5 Bf8 not good, and 7 -f3 Sb8 Sg1 - c6 8 Lc1 - g5 (on 7 Lc1 - f4 follows 7. .. Nc6 - b4 with advantage for Black) Bf8 - e7 9 Lg5xe7 Dd8xe7 10 Nb1 - c3 Sc6xe5 11 Sf3xe5 Sg4xe5 leads to a balanced position. 5 e4 e5 Nf6 -d5 6 Lf1 - c4 leads to the Queen's Gambit Accepted.

Overall, however, the Marshall defense is considered as not being adequate and comes in today's masters practice only very rarely.
