Marsica

The Marsican is an association of 36 municipalities in the inner Abruzzo in the province of L' Aquila in Italy. These communities around the main Avezzano, understood as Nachfolgeterretorium the old tribal territory of the Italian people of the Marsi.

Besides the joint cultivation of tradition and history there is to form an independent province aspirations.

Nature and Protected Areas

The mountains in the area are covered by beech forests.

Numerous natural parks and nature reserves dominate the area. Thus, the following protected areas extend all or part of the territory of the Marsican: in the South National Park of Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise, in the southwest Riserva naturale guidata Zompo lo Schioppo, in the East Regional Park naturale del Sirente - Velino, in the northeast Riserva Naturale Monte Velino, and in the West Riserva naturale guidata Monte Salviano

A special feature is the presence of the Martian brown bear (Ursus arctos marsicanus ), one occurring only in a small area endemic bear style.

Customs

The war Marsi were after earlier reports, snake worshipers, snake charmers and magicians. This tradition lives in the now Christian Schlangenprozzesion in the small mountain town Cocullo in honor of Saint Dominic of Sora continues.
