Martin city gate

The St. Martin's in Cochem or Mäuschesportz is next to the Enderttor and the Balduinstor one of the three surviving gates in the county town of Cochem.

History

The St. Martin's, Elector Baldwin of Luxembourg, who was Archbishop of Trier at the same time, build in 1352. The popularly common name for the city gate Mäuschesportz recalls its former use as a toll or toll gate. This one inch chain ( reel ) was placed between the Imperial Castle and the opposite bank of the Moselle. This ships could be stopped in order to enforce the payment of duties.

The smaller tower of the Martin gate was rebuilt by Louis Jacques Ravené, a later owner of the city gate to an ice house.

Area of the gate

There is a winding path to the Toraußenseite. This was created by Ravené on the steep slope to the imperial castle.

A holy house " to painful nut " from 1710 is located at the leading through the gate travel path, a few meters from goal.
