Martin J. Schreiber

Martin James " Marty " Schreiber ( born April 8, 1939 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin) is an American politician. He was from 1977 to 1979 the 39th Governor of Wisconsin.

Early years and political rise

Schreiber attended the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee and Valparaiso University. He then studied at the Law School at Marquette University law. There he got his degree in 1964. As a member of the Democratic Party clerk sat 1963-1971 in the Senate of Wisconsin. In 1970 he was elected to the side of Patrick J. Lucey for Lieutenant Governor of Wisconsin. 1974 were both re-elected.

Governor of Wisconsin

As Governor Lucey resigned from his position as governor because of his appointment as U.S. ambassador to Mexico in July 1977, Schreiber had to finish the unexpired term as his deputy. He officiated so between July 7, 1977 to January 1, 1979 as governor. Scribe stood up for a better education policy. He also looked after the interests of children and young people, the protection of consumers and the rights of workers and the elderly. Scribe years in office suffered from a general poor economy and high inflation. In order to cover the state budget, the governor had to increase some taxes, which was resented by some citizens. That was also a reason for his defeat in the gubernatorial elections of 1978 in which he had applied for a full term as governor. He only came to 44.9 percent of the vote and was defeated by Republican Lee S. Dreyfus.

More career

In 1982, Schreiber ran again for the post of governor. This time he was already in the primaries of his party stuck, the Tony Earl decided for themselves. After that, he was temporarily working as a lawyer. In 1988, he competed unsuccessfully against John Norquist at the election of the mayor of Milwaukee. In the same year he founded his own consulting firm that maintains good relations with all political forces in Wisconsin; including the congressmen of the state and the government of Wisconsin. Martin Schreiber is married to Elaine Thaney. Together they have four children.
