Martin Kušej

Kušej Martin ( born May 14, 1961 in Wolfsberg, Carinthia ) is an Austrian theater director, opera director and manager.

Life

From 1978 to 1982 studied Kušej Sports Science, German Language and Literature at the University of Graz. From 1982 to 1985 he studied directing at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz. After graduation, he assisted at the Salzburg State Theatre and at the Slovenian National Theatre Ljubljana. In 1987, he staged there by Karl Schönherr at the Schauspielhaus in Graz. In 1990 he founded, together with the set designer Martin Zehetgruber the group My friend Martin. From 1993 to 2000 he was resident director at the Staatstheater Stuttgart. From 2004 to 2006 he was acting director of the Salzburg Festival. He directed, among others at the Deutsches Theater Berlin, the Berlin State Opera, at the Volksbühne Berlin, at the Graz Opera, the Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg, at the Thalia Theater in Hamburg, at the Burgtheater in Vienna and at the Zurich Opera House.

Kušej received numerous awards. 1999, 2001 and 2009, he was invited to the Berlin Theatre Meeting. In 1993 he was awarded the Kurt- Hübner- Director's Award of the German Academy of Performing Arts. He was awarded the 3sat Innovation Award 1999. 2006 and 2009 he received NESTROY the Viennese theater price. In 2012 he was awarded the German Theatre Prize FIST.

Since 2011 Kušej is director of the Bavarian State Theatre in Munich. He is a member of the German Academy of Performing Arts.

In May 2013 Kušej (Institute of Drama and Acting Director of the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna ) was appointed from October 2013 to the Director professor at the Max Reinhardt Seminar in Vienna. Kusej succeeds Michael Gruner, who retires at the end of the semester.
