Martín Rico

Martín Rico y Ortega ( born November 12, 1833 in Madrid, † April 13, 1908 in Venice) was a Spanish Impressionist painter. He counted at the time of the few excellent Spanish landscape painters. His detailed and atmospheric works often reflect the architecture. Even the hustle and bustle of several people could Rico y Ortega hold with his photorealistic memory in his paintings. His technique blended the art of panoramic painters of the 19th century with the vedutas painters of the 18th century. He partly turned to Hyper realism by changing perspectives of buildings to make them more recognizable. Rico y Ortega was one of the first in situ landscape painters - so he was not painting in the studio. He became internationally known mainly for his numerous pictures of his choice city of Venice.

Life

Martín Rico y Ortega was born in El Escorial, Madrid, and grew up in a family of artists and was inspired by his brother Bernardino Rico [* 1825; † 1894 ] trained as engraver. He studied art painting began Rico y Ortega in Madrid at the Escuela de Bellas Arte de San Fernando (now the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando ) under the supervision of Prof. Jenaro Pérez Villaamil, the first landscape painter to this art academy, and Federico de Madrazo y Kuntz. Early works by Rico y Ortega show influences of Romantic landscape painting in the style of Jenaro Pérez Villaamil, David Roberts and Joseph Mallord William Turner. Funded by scholarships, he studied in Rome and Paris. Supported and inspired by the Barbizon school, he was by Charles -François Daubigny, Eduardo Zamacois y Zabala and Ernest Meissonier. From 1860, traveled Rico y Ortega Europe, in particular Brittany, Switzerland and England, he was settled in Paris. He also worked as an art director of the magazine La Española y Americana Art work. During the Franco-German War of 1870-71, he returned to Spain. After that, he settled permanently in Venice down, but also traveled through Spain and frequently to Paris. His last artistic phase was now dominated by the influence of Mariano José Bernardo Fortuny y Marsal. Martín Rico y Ortega died at the age of 74 years in Venice, his tomb is located there in the Cimitero di San Michele.

Awards

Martín Rico y Ortega has won several awards, including In 1862 the Prix de Rome, which was first awarded to a landscape painter. He exhibited his works regularly in the 1864 Paris Salon, where he a prestigious silver medal was awarded in 1866. In 1878 he was awarded at the Paris World's Fair, a bronze medal and the special honor as Chevalier de la Légion d' honneur, at the Paris World Exhibition of 1889 he received a silver medal.

Martín Rico y Ortega signed his paintings with Rico (in several different spellings ), he never created very large plants ( typical " Rico " have dimensions of 28 x 17 inches).
