Martin Severin From

Martin Severin From Janus ( born April 8, 1828 in Nakskov; † May 6, 1895 in Copenhagen) was a Danish chess master.

From Severin grew up in poverty and tried from 1845 - with the help of Hans Christian Andersen and his patron, functionary Jonas Collin - vain on a literary career. In 1849 he was a soldier in the Schleswig- Holstein War ( 1848-1851 ) and worked from 1853 at the Danish Ministry of Justice, where he worked with the prison administration. In 1890 he became director in Christianshavn in Copenhagen Straffeanstalt. In 1891 From received the award " Ridder af Dannebrog ", an award of the Dannebrog.

Mid-19th century was as the best chess player From his country. In 1862, the Berlin ( later German ) chess newspaper published a game between Magnus and Oscar Møllerstrøm From (played 1862 in Copenhagen) replied in the From the Bird Opening 1 f2 - f4 with the e7 - e5 Gambit.
