Work

In 2001, Martina Löw published a sociology of space, which sees the emergence of space as a social phenomenon, which depends on social developments. Loew sees the space as a relational arrangement of social goods and animals, which is produced by the synthesis and the placement of these elements. Such a procedural concept of space contrasts the previously dominant in sociology believes that conceives space as a rigid background of social processes. Building on this work Loew empirically the question of how spatial constructions are changed in and through electronic networks. Other research focuses on "Space, power and social differentiation " as well as ethnographic studies city.

In the field of urban research has " Public Safety " and " Theatre and the City" carried out the thematic field Loew various sub-studies. An empirical study of the effect of structure of space and gender on the example of prostitution in Frankfurt aM complements the topic. Her latest research approaches include analyzing urban inherent logic. The inherent logic of the city refers to a complex ensemble of knowledge stocks and expressions that are inherently related, based on rule-governed, routinized and resources stabilized forms of action and compact cities to sense provinces.

As of summer 2008, Löw was Coordinator of the Hessian Ministry of Economics and Art in the provincial campaign for the development of scientific and economic excellence ( LOEWE ) funded center of gravity " Intrinsic Logic of Cities ", a collaborative project of the Technical University of Darmstadt and the University of Darmstadt. " Internal logic " stands as a working concept for each specific and "typical" properties as well as tacitly effective processes shaping the sense of a city. The aim is to understand the basic structures of the cities as well as to understand relations and similarities between the cities. The central methodological tool is the comparison of cities.

The inherent logic approach thus differs significantly from other perspectives within the urban research which, while doing research in the city, however, consider the city as such as a given, not to be examined size. The research approach to the intrinsic logic of cities, however, makes the city itself on the subject matter.
