Márton Homonnai

Márton Homonnai ( born February 5, 1906 in Budapest, † 15 October 1969 in Buenos Aires ) was a Hungarian water polo player.

Homonnai first participated at the Olympic Games in Paris in 1924 when he finished fifth with 18 years in water polo. Four years later, he reached in Amsterdam with the Hungarian team the finals and lost there first against the team from Germany with 2:5 and took silver. Again, four years later, at the 1932 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, the Hungarian team took revenge for this defeat and beat Germany in the decisive final game 6-2. Hungary was Olympic champion and Homonnay, who acted this time as team captain, won his first gold medal along with his teammates György Bródy, Sándor Ivády, Olivér Halassy, József Vértesy, János Németh, István Barta, Alajos Keseru, Miklós Sárkány and Ferenc Keseru.

His second gold medal brought Homonnai at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, when he claimed a 5-0 victory over France and a 2-2 draw over Germany together with György Bródy, Kálmán Hazai, Olivér Halassy, Jenő Brandi, Mihály Bozsi, János Németh István Molnár, György Kutasi, Sándor Miklós Taric and Sárkány on goal difference won the gold medal and Germany was second.

Homonnai also won from 1926 to 1934 four European titles. In total he played 126 matches for the Hungarian water polo team. 1971 Márton Homonnai was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame.
