The Maruia River is a river in north-west in the region on the South Island of New Zealand Tasman. It is an important tributary of the Buller River and extends over 80 km, then 8 km west of Murchison to open into the Buller River.

The Maruia River springs from the Spenser Mountains and runs in first southwestern direction, then he swings for the last 50 km of its course to the north. Its upper course forms the western access to the Lewis Pass, the northernmost of the three passes through the Southern Alps. In the area of the upper reaches are thermal springs. The resort Maruia Springs is located five kilometers west of the Lewis Pass, 50 kilometers southeast of Reefton.

The lower reaches of Maruia, 22 kilometers south of Murchison, are the Maruia Falls. This originated in 1929 by an earthquake, which lowered the lower reaches of the river one meter here. The case is now about 10 feet high by erosion and settling of the soil.

State Highway 65 follows up on a short deviation to the west at Burnbrae the river. Also the SH 7 uses its valley of Springs Junction towards Lewis Pass. Places along the river are from south to north: Maruia Springs, Springs Junction, Maruia, Warwikc Junction, Paenga, Minehaha, Shenandoah, Glengarry and Ariki.
